BAZAR DEL SÁBADO
FOLLOW THE MAP WE SHARE WITH YOU IN THIS SECTION, SO YOU CAN FIND OUR FAVORITE SHOPS, MUSEUMS AND RESTAURANTS TO ENJOY THE BEST OF THIS LOVELY DISTRICT.
Everything is very close to each other. It is a very safe region, and it is fine to walk around (just be aware of pickpockets).
MOST shops are high-end, WHERE YOU WILL FIND VERY GOOD QUALITY CONTEMPORARY MEXICAN DESIGNS.
BEGIN AT:
· SAN ANGEL INN RESTAURANT:
This former colonial hacienda is one of my favorite places. It is a perfect example of what homes in the colonial era used to look like. Enjoy its courtyard, corridors, gardens (in the back), and domestic chapel.
*They are known for the best-frozen margaritas in the city.
· MUSEO CASA ESTUDIO DIEGO RIVERA Y FRIDA KAHLO:
o This is just next door to the restaurant. When this great couple married, it was their house.
o It is the first modernist architecture in the country. It was designed and built by O´Gorman, a great Mexican architect. I don’t know if it is open, but if it is, you will love to see Diego’s studio, which remained just as he had it until he died in 1957. From the outside, these houses are enjoyable as well, and the cactus fence is the original from 1932.
o This is not the “Blue House”; that was Frida’s family home. That one is very close to here, but it is in Coyoacán.

UBER OR WALK TO:
1) IGLESIA Y MUSEO DEL CARMEN
o Visit the church, which offers great examples of Baroque art.
o This museum is one of my favorites in the city. It is next door to the church, a 1620s Carmelite-order monastery. The monastery has great architecture and a small but good colonial art collection.
MAGDA: This lovely restaurant, with a beautiful terrace and view, is next to the museum.
I recommend having a drink or some snacks here.
2) MERCADO DEL CARMEN (Calle de Amargura): Various Mexican designer shops and restaurants inside a former hacienda.
3) SHOPS & RESTAURANTS: Various Mexican designer shops inside a former hacienda.
FÁBRICA SOCIAL: Across the park from these shops, visit this great project, which offers amazing Mexican textiles and designs with beautiful embroidery in a 100% fair trade shop.
4) CASA DEL OBISPO: a lovely colonial-era former bishop’s home with a beautiful courtyard.
5) IGLESIA DE SAN JACINTO: a colonial church from the Dominican order, what is left of all the monasteries from the 1600s. With a lovely courtyard
6) MEXICAN CONTEMPORARY DESIGNERS’ SHOPS AND STREET MARKET: Don’t miss the shops next door to the church. One of my favorites is the first one, with the tallest steps and Frida´s altar.
7) BAZAAR DEL SÁBADO (ONLY SATURDAYS): This former conquistador's home house since the 1960s offers great Mexican contemporary design every Saturday.
o In the courtyard is a nice restaurant, OXA, where you can have a drink or lunch.
SAKS: Next door to the Bazar del Sábado, I suggest you go inside this traditional restaurant to appreciate a beautiful example of colonial architecture, with some changes made in the late 1800s.
CASA DEL RISCO: Next to the Saks restaurant, you will find this cultural center, where you will appreciate a one-in-a-kind beautiful fountain with mother pearls and Mexican and Asian dishes in its courtyard.
8) DE CORAZON MÉXICO: this is a great option for high-end handcrafted pieces from Oaxaca. It is a lovely shop that offers beautiful pieces mostly made in clay.
9) ART MARKET ON THE PARK: In the 1960s, some artists decided to sell their art without the need to be supported by galleries, which since then has taken the name of “Jardín del Arte” (art garden).
LUNCH SUGGESTIONS:
For any of these options, make a previous reservation because they get very busy (during weekends, some of these options don’t take reservations)
